V. We’re All in This Together: Your Voice Needs to Be Heard, Too

It is tempting to tell ourselves that we do not have a problem; that things will eventually blow over. Staying silent is not a sign of consent but merely prudence. But remember, as Aristotle taught us, virtue is a means. The virtue of courage is the difference between cowardice and foolhardiness. Aristotelian moral courage teaches us not to be too rash or too fearful, which requires us to intellectually look at the intrinsic value of a claim and pursue its normative value. However, that is seldom the case, as a great many men and women are all too willing to make a claim with no basis and those judging the claim are willing to cast judgment without serious investigation. In essence, both groups rule each other out. In his 2011 book The Inquiring Mind, Jason Baehr likewise argues that intellectual courage is best construed as a disposition to respond well to threats to one’s epistemic well-being.

As we discussed earlier in this book, no one is advocating you go out in the streets and light police vehicles afire; no one is advocating looting or destroying private property or public monuments. No one is saying you have to take a knee. However, you have to take a stand, because at the end of the day, this affects all of us. You take a stand because you understand this affects your community. It affects your children. This issue is not going away. The longer you believe it is going to blow over, the longer the feelings of distress will last.

We as a society cannot wish these problems away, nor can we just hope that they organically improve because while nature heals, it alters and changes in the process and that requires effort and work. We cannot go to bed hoping these problems are a nightmare that only exists during our deepest levels of sleep because once you are awakened, you’ll soon realize it was never just a dream, but the harsh reality that you’ll never be able to escape. Therefore, it leads us all to face the harsh reality that if it is inescapable, we are left with only one final solution and that is to tackle the problem head-on.

We have reached a pinnacle moment in our society where we need to have voices of moral conscience speaking up, but we must also recognize that those good voices, those voices that seek to be a light in the dark, may not agree on all things. That’s okay as long as there is shared agreement on the problem at hand, and I for one believe that there is. I know that Americans of every race and creed cry out for a day when we can move beyond race. I know that men and women of conscience hope for and are willing to work for a society where the next generations and generations unborn know nothing of a society that judges based
